Thomson Buys Reuters: Managing the Rebrand of a Global Information Leader E-mail

fred_hawrysh.jpgThe Fairfield County Public Relations Association (FCPRA) continues its “Best Practices Series” with Fred Hawrysh, Global Director, Corporate Affairs at Thomson Reuters.  Mr. Hawrysh will offer a practical insider’s view of the public relations challenges presented by one of the largest acquisitions of recent years – Thomson’s recently completed acquisition of Reuters.

The newly combined company, Thomson Reuters, is the world’s leading source of intelligent information for businesses and professionals.  The company combines industry expertise with innovative technology to deliver critical information to leading decision makers in the financial, legal, tax and accounting, scientific, healthcare and media markets, powered by the world’s most trusted news organization.  Thomson Reuters employs more than 50,000 people in 93 countries.

Mr. Hawrysh will discuss how the company is managing the massive rebranding of the combined information and news organizations with very different cultures.  This new corporate identity is a marked departure from the historical look and feel of the two companies.  He will also discuss the special challenge of dealing with reporters as part of their internal audience and the communications surrounding one of the most complex SEC approval processes in recent history.

2008 Charter Oak Award Nominations Open E-mail

The second FCPRA Charter Oak Award will be presented at our annual meeting in June this year.  While the board has a couple of candidates in mind, we'd like member feedback on who you think is worthy of recognition.  The award criteria and description are below.  Please send your suggestions to Rich Diefenbach, program committee chair, at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it   Thank you!

The FCPRA Charter Oak Award recognizes an individual with integrity, fortitude and perseverance in the communications field; someone who personifies the qualities of the mighty oak tree. The "Charter Oak," as displayed on this award, is the Connecticut state symbol and was a historic landmark for 194 years before it was toppled in an 1856 storm.  A majestic oak on the Wyllys estate in Hartford was chosen as a safe haven to protect Connecticut's Royal Charter of 1662 from agents of King James II who wanted to revoke the state's charter.  This mighty oak stood for nearly two centuries as a testament to actions that preserved the charter along with the freedoms and liberties of our American heritage.

60 Minutes Executive Producer Jeffrey Fager Honored by FCPRA E-mail

Fager presented with the first annual FCPRA Charter Oak Award for Journalistic Integrity and Excellence in Storytelling  -- by Rich Diefenbach.

When I asked CBS News 60 Minutes Executive Producer Jeffrey Fager to be part of our May program, I knew his professionalism and integrity would provide enormous insight for PR professionals. Not only did Mr. Fager give details about what types of stories they do, but how they do it differently from other news programs.

It was like being invited to a private club and treated to the insights and tips of a master journalist. In his presentation, he showed a taped piece by reporter Scott Pelley who travelled deep into the heart of the Darfur region, to tell the story of a young man whose village had been completely destroyed in the genocidal war. Quite a different piece than the typical reports limited to the safer base camps along the border.

Many PR professionals started as reporters because they understand the art of storytelling and they now apply these skills when profiling and marketing an individual, an event or a brand.
